The Free Wheels festival, launched in 1988 by the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club on the French Riviera, quickly changed course after a difficult start. Moving to Cunlhat, in Auvergne, the following year, the event became a must-attend for motorcycle and rock enthusiasts. The festival gained momentum right from its early editions, with nearly 4,000 bikers attending from the start in the Puy-de-Dôme.
This annual gathering saw exponential growth, attracting more and more participants and visitors. By 1995, it was already hosting 20,000 bikers and over 60,000 visitors. Two years later, in 1997, the record was set with nearly 100,000 attendees according to the organizers. This success earned the festival national recognition, with even a postage stamp issued by La Poste in 1993.
Free Wheels stood out not only for its numbers but also for its unique atmosphere. The combination of rock concerts, spectacular stunts, drag racing, pyrotechnic displays, and various shows, such as striptease performances, made this event an unmissable gathering, known for its well-organized setup and absence of major incidents.
